The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) is delighted to announce the successful conclusion of the Annual Sickle Cell Run 2026, held on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at Pharmacy House in Kyambogo.
This inspiring charity event marked the official start of Pharmacy Week 2026 and brought together runners, pharmacists, partners, and community members in a powerful show of solidarity against sickle cell disease.Participants took part in both 5 km and 10 km races that began at 6:00 am, combining fitness with a meaningful cause.
The run focused on raising awareness about sickle cell disease, promoting early screening, and mobilising resources for Hydroxyurea — the gold-standard medicine that helps manage the condition and reduce life-threatening complications.Uganda carries one of the highest burdens of sickle cell disease in the world, with approximately 20,000 to 25,000 children born with the condition every year.
Many families struggle to afford treatment, making community support critical. Through this year’s run, PSU raised close to Shs 50 million and, with the generous support of pharmaceutical partners led by DEI Biopharma Limited, mobilised nearly 30,000 doses of Hydroxyurea under the HYXUREA brand.
These contributions will go directly to vulnerable patients, particularly children, who cannot access the medicine on their own.The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda extends its sincere appreciation to:All runners who laced up their shoes for the cause.

Every member of the PSU family who stood with us
Your collective effort has not only raised funds and medicines but has also amplified the call for early screening, reduced stigma, and greater national attention to sickle cell disease — a condition that affects far too many Ugandan families.
As we celebrate this successful first activity of Pharmacy Week 2026, we remain committed to improving access to essential medicines and advancing the role of pharmacists in public health. Together, we are proving that no patient should suffer or die simply because they cannot afford treatment.
Thank you for running with us, standing with us, and believing in a healthier Uganda.
